How to get an API key
Important: Your API key is a secret that allows making requests to the API which you will be charged for. Keep it safe. If you think the key has been compromised, revoke it and create a new one.
Sumr supports multiple providers:
- OpenAI — platform.openai.com
- Anthropic — console.anthropic.com
- Any OpenAI-compatible endpoint — configure a custom base URL in Sumr settings
OpenAI setup steps
- Go to OpenAI Platform and sign up (or login)
- Select
APIfrom the menu and clickGet Started - Open API keys
- Enter a name for your API key and click
Create secret key - Copy your API key and store it someplace safe (ideally in your password manager)
- Add a billing method: Settings → Organization → Billing → Add to credit balance
- (Optional but recommended) Set usage limits

Sumr is not storing your API key in iCloud or on any other server. If you need to reinstall the app, the key will not be preserved.
Tip: if you lose your key, revoke it and create a new one so no one else can use it.
Paste your key in Sumr
Go to Sumr app → Settings → select your provider → paste your API key. The key will autosave.
Tip: on macOS you can use Cmd+A to open the API key section and Cmd+V to paste. Cmd+E will clear the key.
